Paul College Diversity and Inclusion Working Group

The Paul Diversity and Inclusion Working Group held its first meetings of the fall semester this September welcoming new members and outlining new diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) goals for the academic year. In their most recent meeting, they had the opportunity to meet with UNH’s newly appointed Chief Diversity Officer Nadine Petty to discuss ways the Paul working group could support the university’s DEI goals. Areas of focus for 2020-21 include but are not limited to, student engagement activities, faculty workshops on inclusive teaching practices, and new recruiting and retention efforts for faculty/staff/students from underrepresented identities.

The working group also reviewed DEI initiatives from the previous year. In 2019-2020, student-focused initiatives included incorporating DEI programming into the Paul FIRE program and developing DEI required training for all Paul club and organization student leaders. For faculty and staff, DEI programming included SafeZone trainings to increase awareness, knowledge, and skills around LGBTQIA+ services and support, and the launch of a virtual book club. This summer 13 faculty and staff members met to discuss Dr. Ibram X. Kendi’s How to Be an Antiracist, and 20 more have signed up for book clubs this fall.

The Paul D&I Working Group is composed of students, staff, and faculty members and aims to increase the Paul community’s capacity to be “an inclusive community that respects and harnesses the power of diverse perspectives, identities, and experiences to enhance learning.”
