How Do Employees Feel About AI-driven Performance Evaluations?

How do employees feel about AI-driven performance evaluations?
This is the question Yunshil Cha, assistant professor of accounting and finance, seeks to answer in her recent publication in the Journal of Information System
In her article, "Employees’ Reactions to Algorithmic Performance Evaluation: Threat of Evaluation Bias and Objectivity," Cha examines whether workers prefer performance reviews conducted by artificial intelligence over those done by human supervisors.
Her research reveals a key insight—employees who anticipate bias or unfair treatment from a human supervisor, such as favoritism or personal disapproval, are more likely to trust AI-driven evaluations. Through simulated workplace scenarios, she found that while employees favored AI when they feared negative bias, they preferred human evaluations when they expected a positive bias in their favor.
The findings suggest that AI’s perceived objectivity could make it a fairer alternative in certain workplace settings and even influence employee retention.
