Nikhil Awasty, an assistant professor of organizational behavior, was part of a research team exploring how music influences workplace focus and performance.

In the study titled “Too much of a Good Thing? A Multilevel Examination of Listening to Music at Work,” published in the Journal of Applied Psychology in August, Awasty and his colleagues reveal that while music can be beneficial for productivity, the effects can wear off with prolonged exposure.

The research used a mix of approaches, including a pilot study, a lab experiment, and a longer-term field study with full-time employees. Across the board, moderate music listening (about an hour longer than usual) improved performance, but listening to music for too long (three hours more) led to diminishing returns.
