"My economics major is like a puzzle that never gets boring."

Student Laura Earle sits on a stone wall, hand in her hair, laughing. Her feet rest on a stone walkway and trees and dappling sunlight are in the background.

INTEREST & ACCOMPLISHMENTS AT UNH 👩‍💻

President of Artifex Business Analytics Club, Dean's Ambassador, Paul Scholar

Discovering My Path

Back in high school, I was a music kid through and through. Band, chorus, theater – if it involved music, I was there. I even played the trombone (fun fact: it used to be called a sackbut 🎺). My initial plan was to pursue music education, but as I approached my senior year, I realized that it might not provide the financial stability I wanted.

A Fluke That Changed Everything

My journey into economics started as a complete fluke. While applying to UNH, I couldn't find the accounting major button (pro tip: it's under business administration until sophomore year!). So, I clicked on economics and figured I’d sort it out later. Little did I know, that one click would change my entire career path.

Falling in Love with Economics

In my first microeconomics class, the blend of math and logic-driven theory immediately hooked me. Robert Mohr, a professor who soon became a mentor, encouraged me to switch to the analytical track. His support and the research opportunities he offered quickly solidified my passion for economics. I'm actually working with him on a research project right now!

Diving into Data Analytics

Through Artifex, a data analytics club I now lead, I found my niche. The club confirmed my desire to pursue a career in creative problem-solving, coding, and programming. It even led to my current job as a material supply analyst! My time with Artifex has been transformative, blending technical skills with real-world applications.

Balancing Fun and Academics

Outside of academics, my friends and I have a quirky tradition: every week, we try different flavors from Crumbl Cookies. 🍪 We taste them together and rank them in a spreadsheet (yes, we are that dorky). While we’re homebodies at heart, we also love exploring Portsmouth, dinner at Margarita’s, bowling, and enjoying the beach.

Choosing UNH

My decision to attend UNH was influenced by COVID chaos – it made staying close to home more appealing. The scholarship money was a significant factor too. The Paul Scholars program provided a solid start and connected me with amazing people who have become integral to my academic journey.

Advice for Future Students

My biggest piece of advice: get involved, but do it thoughtfully. You don't need to join a million clubs. Focus on the ones that truly resonate with you. It's better to give your all to a few than to spread yourself too thin. Find your passion, and let it guide your involvement and career path.
