Coming straight from my undergraduate studies here at Paul College, I knew this was the perfect timing to pursue an advanced degree — there's a certain momentum that carries you forward when you transition directly from undergrad to graduate school.

Why I Chose UNH's M.S. in Economics Program

As an undergrad, I majored in analytical economics and developed a passion for it; I even worked as an economics tutor. While the technical skills I learned were valuable, what really sets the master’s program apart is its emphasis on developing crucial soft skills. The curriculum challenges us to enhance our critical thinking, self-advocacy, and collaboration abilities – skills that can only be developed by pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone.

Academic Rigor and Real-World Application

The program's intensity surprised me, but in the best possible way. It's incredibly fast-paced and challenging, pushing me to my academic limits in a constructive manner.

This intensity is particularly evident in courses like Econometrics I, where diving into advanced statistics and mathematical theory has given me an entirely new perspective on probability and how to interpret the world through a mathematical lens.

I appreciate how the program balances theoretical learning with practical application. For instance, my capstone project requires working with an actual firm to solve real pricing issues. In our Macro Strategy course, we work with data to create statistical models for economic environments, including forecasting for modern-day concerns like interest rates, inflation, and unemployment.

Support and Resources at Paul College

The Paul College community has been incredibly supportive of my academic and professional growth. The advisors consistently go above and beyond what I would expect. The college also provides substantial financial support – I've personally received over $5,000 through the Internship Opportunity Fund, which helped fund my unpaid internships. The facility itself is impressive, with excellent resources like breakout rooms and classroom spaces available for professional interviews and presentations.

Establishing Meaningful Connections

I've formed valuable relationships within the program, particularly with Professor Ahmad, who oversees the Atkins Investment Group. He's an exceptional leader and expert in his field and someone I can turn to for academic and life advice. We've developed a relationship built on mutual respect, and I'm currently working with him on research projects.

Another enriching aspect of my experience has been the international exposure. As the only American in my cohort, I'm constantly learning about different cultures and perspectives from my peers. This diversity has enhanced my understanding of international affairs and economics in ways I hadn't anticipated.

Strengths of the Program

What stands out most about this program is the quality of the faculty. The professors are truly experts in their fields, bringing academic excellence and real-world experience to the classroom. With Paul College's outstanding facilities and resources, it creates an environment where students can thrive.

Most importantly, while the term might be cliché, there's a real sense of family here. Spending so much time with people who are all working toward similar goals and supporting each other's success creates a uniquely welcoming and encouraging atmosphere.
