My family immigrated to Lewiston, Maine in 2007, chasing the American dream. Growing up, I often found myself as the only person of color in many of my classes. It took years to understand that my background wasn't a disadvantage – it was my superpower.
When I first arrived at the University of New Hampshire, I felt lost. Everything was new and unfamiliar. But now, as a sophomore dual-optioning in Finance and International Business & Economics, I can confidently say that coming to UNH was one of the best decisions of my life.
At UNH's Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics, I've discovered incredible opportunities to grow. Here's how I broke out of my comfort zone and found my community:
- Joined Alpha Kappa Psi. Rushing this professional business fraternity helped me build a family away from home. The process also taught me valuable technical and interpersonal skills.
- Participated in Atkins Investment Group. This org is filled with hardworking, warm-hearted individuals who welcomed me with open arms. It's solidified my passion for finance!
- Became a UNH Connect mentor. Connect provided a built-in community from day one. Now I guide other first-gen students, sharing what I've learned along the way.
UNH's focus on practical, hands-on experiences sets it apart from other universities. This approach is particularly evident in the International Business program, where we're constantly applying theories to real-world scenarios.
The Atkins Investment Group is another great example of this. When I walk into the ticker room, it's like... I just love the community aspect of it. Every single person in there is hardworking and driven.
But it's more than just a supportive community. Atkins provides real-world experience in financial analysis, portfolio management, and investment strategies. Through Atkins, I've gained practical experience in using financial software, conducting market research, and making investment decisions with real consequences. These tangible skills are invaluable as I prepare for a career in the finance world.
Being a first-generation student comes with its share of challenges, but at UNH, I've found the support and resources to thrive.
I've already mentioned the UNH Connect Program, but I also had a ton of support within Paul. Caring faculty members like Dean Lu and my advisor Rachel Kim have guided me every step of the way. Career services, with amazing professionals like Meagan Turnbull, have helped me build a strong professional foundation.
To future first-gen Wildcats considering UNH, I encourage you to embrace your background – it's your unique strength. You don't have the same preconceived ideas about college as your classmates. Being first-gen has given me the drive to work harder, the courage to take risks, and the perspective to appreciate every opportunity.
So get yourself out there. Get involved early, seek out mentors, and don't be afraid to take risks and try new things.
And remember, you're not alone. UNH has an incredible community ready to support you every step of the way.
