“The Social Safety Net: An Investment in Children”
Hilary Hoynes, Chancellor Professor of Economics and Public Policy, University of California, Berkeley
    Paul College Marini Auditorium (G75)
    4:00–5:30 p.m. (reception to follow)

Hoynes will discuss emerging research on the long-term impacts of social safety net programs on children. While traditional economic analysis has focused on the incentive effects of programs like tax credits and transfers, this talk highlights their broader benefits—particularly for child development.

Drawing on a growing body of evidence, the lecture will examine how access to programs such as food assistance, the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), and Medicaid in childhood influences outcomes later in life, including health, education, earnings and involvement with the criminal justice system. The talk will also explore these programs through a cost-benefit lens, considering their broader social return, as well as recent findings on unconditional cash transfer policies.
