Conway’s Research Explores Pandemic Lessons on Walkability and Well-Being

Karen Conway’s research, “Walkability and Mental Health Resiliency During the COVID-19 Pandemic,” was recently published in “Health Economics.”

Conway, professor of economics, worked with Andrea Menclova, associate professor of economics at the University of Canterbury and Paul College alum, and analyzed data from more than 55,000 Census tracts nationwide. They found that even small increases in walkability — about four points on the EPA’s Walkability Index — were linked to a 4% reduction in pandemic-related mental health deterioration.

The research underscores how investing in walkable infrastructure can be a cost-effective way to support community well-being.

Conway’s research was featured in the New Hampshire Union Leader and on WMUR Channel 9.
