Every year, a chosen few of UNH’s outstanding faculty members from each college and school receive Faculty Excellence Awards, determined by a faculty committee, in recognition of their achievements in teaching, scholarship and service. This year’s Paul College award winner for lecturer faculty is Rick Kilbride, senior lecturer in the Department of Accounting and Finance.
One of the college’s most notable lecturers, Kilbride’s passion for teaching, dedication to his students, and ability to understand, motivate, and challenge them to work hard and strive for excellence earned him this award.
“Rick’s teaching versatility is extraordinary,” wrote nominator Stephen Ciccone, interim co-chair of the Department of Accounting and Finance. “Students consistently remark how he makes them think deeply and critically about issues and provides them with valuable life skills. Rick is a tremendous instructor... He is also an amazing person.”
Kilbride joined Paul College as an adjunct in 2014, has been a lecturer since 2015, and became a senior lecturer in fall 2019. He has taught seven different courses and has designed and taught two new courses for the finance option.
Effectively using a wide variety of teaching methods, Kilbride is a highly innovative instructor. He is constantly evaluating and revising courses to make them better and integrates the Bloomberg terminals into his courses, providing students with a valuable educational tool and helping them become more marketable to employers.
Kilbride’s courses are always in high demand and fill up quickly despite being held at night. In addition to teaching, he sponsors internships, writes recommendation letters, and uses his contacts to help students land jobs. His open-door policy is well-known in Paul and anyone passing his office will frequently see him meeting with students or conversing with those meeting nearby.
“To have someone with his abilities teach such a large proportion of Paul College’s finance students is a huge benefit to all of us,” said Ciccone.
