Herring's Research Explores How Hospital Payment Reform Is Changing Care Delivery

Bradley Herring, professor of health economics, recently published two papers examining the effects of a hospital payment reform implemented in Maryland.
One paper, published in the Annals of Surgery, found that payment reform's switch from fee-for-service payments to an fixed annual budget accelerated a shift from inpatient to outpatient hospital settings for surgical procedures.
A second paper, published in JAMA Network Open, found that this payment reform reduced the growth in Medicare's total episode payments for patients receiving chemotherapy; the reductions in hospital spending were partially offset by increases in physician spending.
