Markus Schuckert has been named Paul College’s new department chair and professor of hospitality management. He joins the college officially on March 1.

Schuckert has 20 years of international higher education experience in the fields of tourism, hotel administration, and hospitality management. He has held academic and leadership positions at the University of Heilbronn  (Germany), the Institute for Tourism and Leisure Research at the University of Applied Science of the Grisons (Switzerland), the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Hong Kong), and, most recently, at the Lester E. Kabacoff School of Hotel, Restaurant & Tourism Administration (HRT), The University of New Orleans (USA). In his most recent position at the University of New Orleans, Schuckert served as director of Kabacoff School within the business college and as director of the Hospitality Research Center.

“We are very fortunate to have Dr. Schuckert joining our faculty and our academic leadership team,” said Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands. “With his excellence in teaching and research and his international experience he will add great value to our Hospitality Management Department and to Paul College more broadly.” 

Schuckert has extensive teaching experience, having successfully taught a wide array of hospitality and tourism-related courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels using diverse delivery modalities – face-to-face, hybrid, online. His teaching areas include strategic management, marketing, and hospitality and tourism-related courses. Schuckert’s track record in teaching demonstrates his commitment to student-focused learning and continuous innovation and improvement in pedagogy, instructional design, and teaching technologies.

Schuckert is also an engaged researcher. He has published more than 58 peer-reviewed journal articles, of which 39 are in A*- or A-rated journals, 26 book chapters, and co-authored 6 books. He has been successful in securing grant funding for his research. His research is recognized and has had impact in the field. He currently has 3765 citations to his work according to Google Scholar.

His stature and international reputation in the field is further evidenced by the fact that he is coordinating/regional editor of two journals, including one of the leading journals in the field, and serves on the editorial boards of two other journals. He also has presented his research widely across numerous international conferences and has been active in media interviews. His expertise in tourism could provide new opportunities for UNH and Paul College to take a more prominent role in supporting tourism which is the second largest industry in New Hampshire.

Schuckert earned his master’s degree and Doctorate on Social Science and Economics (Dr. rer. soc. oec.) from the University of Innsbruck in Austria.
