Getting here wasn't easy.
As an Iranian student, I faced numerous challenges in obtaining my visa. I waited for more than 400 days – a time filled with uncertainty and anticipation. But the support I received from the University of New Hampshire, especially from my professors, was truly remarkable. They understood my situation and allowed me to defer my offer, even letting me join the program in the spring semester, which is uncommon for economics programs. Their flexibility and understanding made all the difference.
A Different Learning Experience
Coming from Iran, where I completed my bachelor's and master's degrees, the Ph.D. in Economics at UNH Paul College has been a completely different experience.
I can honestly say that I've learned more in the past semester and a half than I did in my entire six years of study back home. The focus here is incredibly practical – our professors emphasize real-world applications of the theories we learn, preparing us for our future careers in ways I hadn't experienced before.
Courses That Make an Impact
While I'm still in the early stages of my program, some courses have already left a significant impact. The Machine Learning course, for instance, has been eye-opening. It's taught me how to work with data effectively, which I believe will be crucial in almost any field of study going forward.
Another standout has been the Game Theory class. The way my professor explains concepts and provides real-world examples of how negotiations and win-lose scenarios play out has been incredibly enlightening.
Balancing Act
Balancing my studies with personal life? Well, I'll admit, I'm a bit of a workaholic. I spend most of my time in the office, working and studying. But for me, it's not just work – it's my personal dream. Still, I try to take some days off to recharge. Last semester, I even managed to hit the gym regularly, which was great for staying fresh. This semester has been more intense, but I'm learning to find that balance.
What Sets UNH Apart
One of the things I appreciate most about UNH is the small cohort size in the PhD in Economics program. With only three or four students per cohort, we get incredible attention from our professors. It allows for more research opportunities and dedicated mentorship, which I've heard isn't always the case in larger programs.
Moreover, the supportive environment here is truly special. Coming from a different academic culture, I've been struck by how approachable and humble the professors are. They're not just teaching us economics; they're showing us how to be better humans and academics. It's a lesson in humility and kindness that I'll carry with me long after I complete my degree.
Looking Ahead
I'm excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. For now, I'm soaking in every experience, every lesson, and every interaction. UNH isn't just providing me with an education; it's shaping me as a person and a professional. And for that, I couldn't be more grateful.
To anyone considering UNH for their graduate studies, I can say this: you'll find not just a school, but a supportive community that will challenge you, support you, and help you grow in ways you never expected. It's been an amazing journey so far, and I can't wait to see what the future holds.
