The Rosenberg International Franchise Center (Peter T. Paul College of Business at the University of New Hampshire) and the International Franchise Association Social Sector Franchise Task Force hosted a 90-minute virtual conference on social franchising.

Panelists Aliouche, Starbird, and Wilson presented their recent articles as published in the Stanford Social Innovations Review (“The Promise of Social Sector Franchising” – February 2021) and discussed social franchising as a promising powerful approach to multiplying the impacts of social enterprises, examined the experiences of four social franchises from different industries and different countries, and reflected on successes, challenges and lessons learned that may be important to the fledgling field of social franchising. Sabrina Habib talked about her experience as the co-founder of social franchisor Kidogo.

Kidogo combines best-practice early childhood Centres of Excellence best practices with a social franchising method that supports the quality improvement and growth of local childcare micro-businesses.

This 2017 case study provides an overview of the business model, operations, and approaches of the social sector franchise, Jibu. Jibu seeks to simultaneously provide lasting access to affordable drinking water and to contribute to economic development through a network of locally-owned franchise businesses in East Africa and beyond.

The goal for the event was to help identify barriers to growth and define actions that can build the Social Sector Franchising ecosystem across diverse contexts.

The Social Sector Franchise Innovations Roundtable (SSFIR) was an invitation-only conference convening a diverse cross-section of social sector franchise entrepreneurs, commercial franchise experts, social impact donors and investors, scholars and students. The goal of the Roundtable was to identify barriers to growth and define actions that can build the social sector franchising ecosystem among diverse contexts, customers, financing and donor/investor relationships.

- A commercial and social franchise expert panel mapped out common interests to build bridges between commercial practices and social sector goals.
- Impact investors and donors explored how to move projects from pilot to investment-ready and discussed risk factors and design weaknesses, which may impede participation of social-oriented investors in the social franchise sector.
- A health panel discussed the role of health franchises in delivering high quality essential care to people in the developing world.
- Three social sector franchise cases, each at a different stage of maturity and complexity, were the subjects of a day-long Accelerator process that resulted in action plans to be implemented over several months. These social sector franchises will receive ongoing support and will report their progress, as well as any challenges.
