Case Studies

Organizational Challenge
A large global defense, aerospace and security company was challenged to adapt to an evolving and challenging business environment that required its leaders to be more globally minded.  Development goals were intensely focused on the leadership and business acumen needed to drive top and bottom-line growth.  Current and emerging leaders needed the strategic insight to accelerate and enhance business opportunities with current customers while continuing to explore ways in which to expand its global footprint and commercial application for its products and services.

The company sent a request for proposal to a number of leading business schools soliciting bids for up to six programs to develop the capabilities required for its senior leaders in order to address these challenges.

The Solution
The University of New Hampshire’s Paul College of Business and Economics submitted proposals for all six programs, competing with The Darden School of Business, Babson, Northeastern, and others. UNH was the chosen to design and deliver programs in Change Leadership and Leading Innovation. UNH was selected for its ability and willingness to work closely with the company to learn their business and co-design leading edge programs to meet their needs.

The Results
The Paul College of Business and Economics is now in its third year of delivering these programs in multiple locations with consistent "very good" to "excellent" program evaluations. New products and services developed in the Leading Innovation program have been selected for further consideration and start-up funding. The Change Leadership program scored a 4.75 out of 5 for "return on investment". A typical reaction from a senior leader was: "This class has changed the way I think. It has been extremely powerful, a class that I will use the rest of my life-personally and professionally."

The company has since reached out to Paul College to develop and deliver programs in Leadership Presentation Skills, Finance for Business Leaders, and additional Innovation workshops.

Organizational Challenge
A regional hospital was looking for ways to improve its patient care expertise and manage rising health care costs. The Director of Operations contacted the Paul College for assistance in introducing LEAN principles to its staff supervisor and managers.

The Solution
The Executive Education Director was able to find a LEAN practitioner with health care industry experience to develop and deliver a program to over 100 of the hospital’s supervisors and managers. The program was designed to highlight corporate best practices as applied within the healthcare industry.

The Results
The program was well received and helped paved the way to hire a full time Director of Process Improvement in order to further develop the in-house LEAN initiatives at the hospital.

Organizational Challenge
A large, global insurance company with a well-developed leadership development program for early career, high-potential employees in both management and actuarial tracks sought to enhance the leadership skills and cohort-building of these employees. The Human Resources and Organizational Development staff chose to partner with the Paul College Executive Education programs to design a program which would focus on the life events,  values, and ideas that have shaped each individual as a leader and how they can maintain their direction and purpose throughout the duration of their career.

The Solution
A two-day “Authentic Leadership Development Program” was co-created and co-delivered at the company’s headquarters. Senior leaders were integrated into each session to deliver interactive presentations demonstrating their authenticity as leaders – describing how they have been shaped as leaders of their company. Participants modeled this with one another to gain a greater depth of understanding and camaraderie within their leadership development program cohort.

The Results
The senior leaders, HR and OD staff, and all 60 participants in the leadership development programs found the programs to be highly engaging and enriching.  A new depth of understanding of the senior leaders and high-potential employees was reached. A common leadership language was created centered on values and behaviors.   Follow-on group coaching was built into each cohort’s program which created meaningful conversations between the participants and the Paul College faculty leader around current leadership challenges. Participants felt a greater sense of trust and an ability to be open and honest with one another which has translated into work they collaborate on regularly.

Organizational Challenge
A large, former state-owned Chinese conglomerate had aspirations to be known as the “GE of China”. In order to compete for business globally, they needed to develop a global mindset, business acumen, and leadership capabilities in their local senior managers.

The Solution
Faculty members and the Executive Education Program Director from the Paul College of Business and Economics traveled to China to learn more about the company, meet with company and government officials, and begin to develop a trusting relationship. An innovative program was developed in which Chinese managers would be sent to one of their U.S based subsidiaries to work, learn the culture, and take a series of 1-2 day management and leadership classes delivered at the Paul College. The program was custom developed to fulfill the learning goals of the company’s managers and to build capabilities in global management, strategic thinking, and innovation.

The participants learned from the class case studies, readings, discussions, and they had the opportunity to visit and tour two New Hampshire companies.

The Results
The program was a success and now an integrated part of the company’s global leadership development strategy. In the course evaluations, every item, including all topics, effectiveness of the delivery, site visits, and program administration all scored between “good” and “excellent.” The instructors were able to create a comfortable and challenging learning environment, and successfully adapted their delivery to minimize any language or cultural barriers.  One participant summed up the program by saying:  “Overall the program was good and I recommend that it continue for future company exchange groups.”

There were not a lot of resources available for formal training, so supervisors, often promoted because of their technical abilities, were struggling with their role as frontline leaders.

Organizational Challenge
A state-wide not for profit with the mission of supporting businesses  focused on the "triple bottom line" – balancing social, environmental, and financial factors sought to identify a partner in higher education to design and deliver a professional development program for its member-base.

The Solution
Leveraging the strengths of the non-profit organization as well as the University of New Hampshire’s strong reputation in Sustainability a three-day Institute in Corporate Sustainability was launched. Sustainability necessitates an interdisciplinary approach.  Faculty members from across campus are brought together with business practitioners to deliver modules on various topics such as: The Business Implications for Climate Change Trends, Emerging Models for Sustainable Businesses, and The Institute not only features business practitioners as instructors, but also live case studies of triple-bottom line corporations such as a plastics recycling firm and a national organic food production corporation. The learning is rich and directly applicable.

Participants who attend the Institute may also elect to complete a Capstone project in their workplace to receive the Certificate in Corporate Sustainability. This project occurs over a 6-month period after the Institute and is supported by mentors for each individual as well as  periodic events centered on networking as well as diving deeper in a specific content area.

The Results
Participants who attended the Institute claimed that "almost every single component of the institute was relevant to the work that I am doing, literally, today."   "It’s been a fantastic experience. It has been a really great investment of time, the exposure to the different topics a very holistic approach to sustainability has been invaluable."

The capstone projects have yielded tremendous direct results. Projects have ranged widely based on organizational needs. At both a regional grocery store chain and a local hospital projects focused on waste reduction and increased recycling have saved thousands of pounds of garbage from entering the waste stream and have saved thousands of dollars in disposal fees. A global manufacturer of precision laser cutters mapped the sustainable supply chain from the supplier selection process, supplier management, and generated supplier sustainability metrics. In a medical laboratory company, a capstone project tied overall corporate strategic planning to sustainability guiding principles integrating these to  the business’ mission and vision as well as operations & metrics. Participants in the Certificate in Corporate Sustainability are creating sustainable change within their organizations.
