Economics Departments are traditionally housed in the College of Liberal Arts but are also often found in Schools of Business. The University of New Hampshire is unique in that it has a college of business and economics. Here at UNH, we respect economics as a social science while recognizing that it also serves as the foundation for many of the business disciplines.
We are fortunate to have a highly productive faculty that has won numerous awards with respect to teaching and research. Our graduate programs are known for the individual attention that many students receive and our cognate in college teaching. We also offer a weekly seminar where graduate students present their work and are exposed to the research ideas of scholars from around the country. At the undergraduate level, we are introducing new capstone experiences to augment traditional coursework and are creating new opportunities outside the classroom for students to apply the skills and knowledge they have learned in a real world context.
We offer two bachelor’s degrees at the undergraduate level and two degrees at the graduate level.
The Bachelor of Arts is a true liberal arts degree that focuses on social relationships from an economics perspective and strives to develop critical thinking, communications skills, and emphasizes the importance on writing as a means for expressing ideas.
The Bachelor of Science degree is for the undergraduate student who is mathematically inclined and is interested in economics more for the professional opportunities that it affords or is focused on those questions that require the use of empirical analysis to reach some resolution.
The Masters of Arts degree is for those students who would like to continue studying economics with the goal of either continuing their study in order to earn the Doctor of Philosophy degree or would like a career in economics in support of the formation of public policy by working for a government entity, as a consultant helping businesses or governments make sound decisions, or as an analyst in the private sector helping businesses by forecasting demand, understanding the structure of markets, navigating the global economy, or other such activities.
The Doctor of Philosophy, the highest degree offered is available for select students who have completed the Master of Arts degree and would like to eventually become professors or play a more substantive role in the public or private sector by being able to offer a stronger and more deeply developed set of skills and understanding of economic affairs.
